Malaysia go down 2-3 to Thailand

alaysia's hopes for a strong start at the Asia Team Badminton Championships were dashed after they crashed to a 2-3 defeat to Thailand.

The doubles pairs of Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong and Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi flopped as both pairings lost their matches at the Sultan Abdul Halim Stadium here on Tuesday.

World No. 2 Lee Chong Wei had given Malaysia a fine start in their Group C tie when he thumped Khosit Phetpradab 21-13, 21-9 in the first singles tie.

But Rio Olympic silver medallists V Shem-Wee Kiong failed to capitalise on the one-game lead and went down 21-16, 19-21, 20-22 to Kittinupong Kedren-Dechapol Puavaranukroh.

But the second pair of Yew Sin-Ee Yi were a shade off their best as they tamely lost 17-21, 11-21 to Tinn Isriyanet-Kittisak Namdash.

Hopes were then on world No. 86 Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin to deliver the goods.

But Iskandar, who only arrived in Alor Setar on Monday following his semi-finals run in the Indian Open last week, fell flat 13-21, 14-21 to world No. 51 Kantaphon Wangcharoen.

The defeat is certainly a blow to Malaysia who were aiming to qualify as group champions.

Instead, they now need to beat both Myanmar and a higher-ranked Taiwan in order to progress into the quarter-finals.
