Zahid: Penang govt can't deny all responsibility for floods

KUALA LUMPUR: The Penang government cannot deny all responsibility for the severe floods which hit the island recently, said Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
The Deputy Prime Minister said the state government has argued that the flood was not due to hill slope cutting or over-development on the island.
However, Dr Ahmad Zahid said that better planned development and care for environment on the island could have reduced the severity of the floods.
“Yes, for 17 hours the rain fell, but if development was planned well, then we would not have seen such a (severe) flood,” Dr Ahmad Zahid said in his speech when opening Gerakan’s 46th National Delegates Conference here on Sunday (Nov 12).
Dr Ahmad Zahid said, however, that the floods saw everyone, regardless of political belief, coming together to help victims, which is a good sign of harmony in the country.
On the Gerakan's chances in the 14th general election, he said the party can win big and even wrest Penang from Pakatan Harapan if its members work hard.
“It is not impossible for the pendulum (of political support) to swing back towards Gerakan’s favour,” said Dr Ahmad Zahid.
