Worries mount for family of missing student in Johor

JOHOR BARU: The family of an 18-year-old Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) student is worried after finding out that she browsed through self-harm and suicide videos, as well as such websites, before running away from home.
The teenager from Taman Universiti had left several notes on her laptop computer before she left.
Insurance agent Teoh Qiong Lin, 29, believes her sister Man Chee left the house early on Sunday while the whole family was still asleep.
“She left a note on the laptop saying that she has written four letters; they are for our family, our parents, her friends and her social media friends,” she said at a press conference organised by Stulang assemblyman Andrew Chen Kah Eng yesterday.
“I cannot believe the letters were written by my little sister because the Man Chee I know is a polite and soft-spoken girl.
“My family became increasingly worried after we learnt about my sister’s browsing history from her laptop. She had been watching videos and visiting websites that supposedly teach people how to hurt or kill themselves,” she said, adding that Man Chee is the youngest of four siblings.
Her sister, she said, stopped going to school in March as “she could not handle the stress at school”.
“She, however, told us that she’d still sit for the SPM.”
According to Teoh, her family is close-knit and rarely has fights or disagreements.
“We don’t know why she ran away, we have always supported her in everything she does,” Teoh said.
Their father Poh Weng, 57, hoped that his daughter would return home safely so that they could help resolve any problems she may have.
“I will welcome her with open arms and promise not to blame her for what has happened,” he said.
Johor Baru (North) deputy OCPD Supt Beh Eng Lai said police are trying to locate the missing girl.
