Trudeau's no-show a major setback to TPP deal

DANANG: The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) deal among the remaining 11 countries is facing collapse following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's (pic) no-show at a scheduled leaders meeting in Danang on Friday.

The meeting was supposed to issue a declaration on the broad agreement to continue the TPP minus the United States.

However, Trudeau did not turn up and after waiting for an hour, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe as the chair made an announcement to the leaders that the deal cannot be concluded and future meetings would be held.

His announcement caught the leaders, ministers and chief negotiators in attendance by surprised.

"As far as we are concerned, as of last night during the ministers meeting, we have reached a broad agreement to move forward the deal.

"We are now wondering what had happened to Canada, an official told The Star.

It is understood a last minute discussion has been arranged among the TPP-11 ministers this afternoon.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who is here for the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) summit, also attended the TPP 11 meeting.
