Smuggler escapes but leaves behind RM80,000 worth of ciggies

KOTA KINABALU: A suspected smuggler managed to elude a team of policemen by disappearing into a bushy area in the Sandakan district on Friday (Nov 10), but was forced to leave behind about RM80,000 worth of cigarettes.
The suspect was driving a car carrying what is believed to be smuggled cigarettes when security officials noticed him at about 9.30pm.
They tailed the suspect until a bus stop along the Labuk Road and then tried to intercept the vehicle.
"The team went closer and were about to reveal themselves as policemen when the suspect stopped the car and fled into some nearby bushes," said Sabah Marine police Region 4 commander ACP Mohd Yazib Abd Aziz.
Meanwhile, marine police in Sandakan seized over RM15,000 worth of contraband cigarettes from a squatter house near the Cahaya Baru village at about 6.30am on Saturday.
No one was in the house during the raid, he said.
