Scaling the Great Wall

PETALING JAYA: National men’s singles shuttlers Lee Zii Jia and Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin will have to get past the Great Wall of China in the third round of the Bitburger Open in Germany.
World No. 55 and 19-year-old Zii Jia, who won the Polish International in September, was in fine form on Wednesday as he trounced Ukraine’s Artem Pochtarov 21-13, 21-11 in the second round at the Saarlandhalle Arena, Saarbrucken.
The 14th-seeded Zii Jia, who had beaten homester Lars Schaenzler in the first round, will face his first stern test when he takes on world No. 33 Qian Bin for a place in the quarter-finals.
The 26-year-old Iskandar, who has been struggling to find his form since recovering from a back injury earlier this year, thrashed homester Max Weisskirchen 21-13, 21-12 in the second round.
The win is certainly a huge relief for the world No. 78, who lost in the first round of the Polish Open and Czech Open in September.
Iskandar will meet world No. 29 Huang Yuxiang for a place in the last eight.
In women’s doubles, Soong Fie Cho-Tee Jing Yi made the second round after beating Austria’s Ieva Pope-Monika Radovska 21-10, 21-9.
However, the men’s doubles pair of Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani flopped yet again after suffering a 10-21, 13-21 thrashing at the hands of second seeds Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen of Denmark.
The world No. 47 Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin have yet to win a match in Open tournaments since making the final of the Malaysian Masters in January.
