Man drowns during fishing trip

KOTA KINABALU: A man drowned while fishing at a river in Menggatal near here.
The 23-year-old had gone to the river with his elder brother at about 9am on Friday, but parted ways once they got there.
At about noon, the elder brother went ashore and searched for the victim but could not find him. He then went home thinking that the brother had also gone home.
Police chief Asst Comm M. Chandra said upon reaching home, the brother learnt that the victim had not returned and a search was mounted.
ACP Chandra said the victim was later taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for a post-mortem.
In another incident, at least eight families lost their homes in a fire that razed a squatter area in the Lahad Datu district.
Sabah Fire and Rescue Department division operations chief Khatizah Rahaban said they sent a team to the scene after receiving a distress call at about 12.53am Saturday.
"Our team managed to bring the fire under control at about 2.30am and prevented it from spreading further," she said.
She said no casualties or deaths were reported in the fire and investigations are being carried out.
