KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has assured that jailed PKR adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will be given the best treatment possible for his ailment.

The Deputy Prime Minister said the Health Ministry had taken measures requested by Anwar and his family.

Anwar is scheduled to undergo surgery on his right shoulder on Sunday (Nov 12).

"I wish to state that the best treatment by the appropriate medical specialists and post-surgical or post-operative care will be given to him, and we pray that he will have a quick recovery.

"We hope that Health Ministry medical officers will be able to provide the best possible treatment and post-surgical care," he said on Wednesday while winding up the debate at the policy stage for the Home Ministry on the Supply Bill 2018 in the Dewan Rakyat.

Dr Ahmad Zahid's response was welcomed by Anwar's daughter Nurul Izzah (PKR-Lembah Pantai) who intervened to express her thanks.

She also asked for a guarantee of prisoner safety following a road accident that Anwar was involved in when being transported to the Sungai Buloh Prison after treatment at Kuala Lumpur Hospital on Sept 22.

On the accident involving Anwar, Dr Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Home Minister, said an investigation was ongoing and action would be taken against those responsible if it was found that the accident was intentional.

In replying to a supplementary question from Mahfuz Omar (PAS-Pokok Sena) on the appointment of the Inspector-General of Police, Dr Ahmad Zahid said the appointment of Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun as the new IGP was in accordance with procedure and had received the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
