Woman's dreams of beauty unravel as 'gold' threads come loose

KUALA LUMPUR: A 34-year-old woman's dreams of beauty were unravelled after "gold" threads used in a procedure started to come loose.
The woman, only known as Chin, underwent the procedure where gold threads were sewn into her face at a "beauty academy" in Batu Pahat, Johor.
However, Chin, who is a student at the academy, said she had been facing a host of problems since the procedure in July this year.
She claimed she was suffering from unbearable pain, with parts of her face numbed and scarred, as well as sleepless nights.
She also said she had been traumatised by the incident and is undergoing psychiatric treatment.
"I feel cheated ... I wanted to look younger but I have been suffering instead," she said during a press conference organised at Wisma MCA here on Friday.
She said the fees to study at the academy and to undergo the procedure came up to RM20,000.
Chin, who was wearing a cap and dark glasses during the press conference, said she got to know about the academy through an online friend.
She said she had demanded a refund from the academy, but her claim was rejected.
Chin is now mulling legal action.
MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Seri Michael Chong said they had received reports of 16 such cases of botched cosmetic procedures and surgeries over past two years.
"There is nothing wrong with beauty procedures but it must be done by proper and qualified people," he said.
