Rahman Dahlan: Statistics can be a yardstick for a better life

BANGI: The National Statistics Department is now empowered to collect data from all government departments and agencies towards creating a more informed society, said Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Dahlan.
The Minister in the Prime Minister's Department said the data gathered by the department would be then analysed for public consumption.
"The approval by the Cabinet will allow the department to collect raw data from various departments and agencies so that the nation will not be left out in the open data revolution," he told reporters after launching the national Mystats Day 2017 celebration at Pusat PERMATApintar Negara here on Friday (Oct 20).
Abdul Rahman, however, said the department's power was limited to data which does not comprise national security or protected personal details.
"Eventually, the data, which is made public could be used for the creation of mobile apps that could help the rakyat make better choices and decisions," he added.
Abdul Rahman also announced that the Cabinet had approved that Oct 20 is declared National Statistics Day.
He said the theme "Better Data: Better Lives" for the inaugural celebrations was an apt one.
"The theme shows how important statistics are for Malaysians to use as a yardstick for a better life," he added.
Earlier, in his speech, Abdul Rahman reminded lawmakers that they should back their arguments with statistics when debating in Parliament and the state legislative assemblies.
"For example, there are those who call for the abolition of the Goods and Services Tax but do not support their arguments with data but with rhetoric," he said.
Present at the event was National Statistics Department director-general Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin.
