More charges over sailors’ murders

MANJUNG: A Royal Malaysian Navy detention unit guard, previously charged with the murder of two seamen, has been hauled to court again and charged with voluntarily causing hurt and criminally intimidating two other navy men.
Three more detention unit guards were also brought to court for separate charges.
Mohd Izhrifikri Roslee, 29 – who was charged with murdering Nik Muhammad Baihaqy Nik Mat and Muhammad Lailaltuiman Mohd Sukri on Oct 13 – claimed trial to six counts of assault under Section 323 of the Penal Code and two counts of criminal intimidation under Section 506 of the same Code.
He is believed to have assaulted Mohd Farhan Md Said, 30, by beating the soles of his feet at the Sungai Wangi Navy Communications Centre training field in Sitiawan near here between 8pm and 10pm on Sept 12; and between 10am and 12pm on Sept 13 and Sept 14.
The court also heard that Mohd Izhrifikri criminally intimidated Mohd Farhan in the front corridor of cell number seven and Mohd Syaiful Nizam at cell number four of the detention centre between 2pm to 3pm on Sept 29.
The accused allegedly threatened to beat the victims to death and to harm their family members if they made a statement to the police.
In the same courtroom, Hamzah Zakaria @ Ali, 35, who was previously charged with assaulting the two deceased, as well as Mohd Farham Mohd Azmi, 31, and Saifulnizam Razaly, 37, were charged with assaulting Mohd Farhan by beating the soles of his feet between 10am to 12pm on Sept 13.
Mohd Farham pleaded guilty, while the other two claimed trial.
Mohd Farham asked for a lenient punishment, saying that he had to look after his mother, wife, children and a younger sibling who was still studying.
Magistrate Nur Shaqira Ibrahim meted out a RM1,600 fine to Mohd Farham, or six months’ jail should he fail to pay up.
She set bail at RM4,000 with one surety for both Hamzah and Saifulnizam. She also fixed Oct 30 for mention.
DPP Ahmad Faiz Fitri Mohamad prosecuted.
