MCA: Has Kit Siang absolved Dr M for Ops Lalang?

PETALING JAYA: MCA has chided DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang for his partnership with Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad despite the latter’s direct involvement in Ops Lalang when he was the prime minister.
MCA publicity spokesman Datuk Seri Ti Lian Ker said that Kit Siang and his son, DAP secretary general Lim Guan Eng, released statements on the 30th anniversary of Ops Lalang that “conveniently made no mention of Dr Mahathir”.
He questioned why this was the case when six years ago, Kit Siang had written in a blog post that pinned the responsibility directly on the former premier.
Ti said Kit Siang had accused Dr Mahathir of rewriting the history of the incident in a book he published in 2011 when he blamed the police for making the arrests.
“It was only a few years ago that the entire blame was placed solely and squarely on Dr Mahathir,” Ti said in a statement on Saturday.
Ops Lalang started after 19 people were arrested on Oct 27, 1987.
By late November, a total of 106 people, including opposition and Barisan Nasional politicians, academics and leaders of non-government organisations, were nabbed under the Internal Security Act.
Most of those detained during Ops Lalang were released within 60 days, but 40 others, including Kit Siang and Guan Eng, were held for two years.
