Goh Liu Ying readies for comeback

SERI KEMBANGAN: Shuttler Goh Liu Ying is all fired up to make a comeback after receiving a sponsorship boost.
The 28-year-old said she was more motivated after signing a one-year contract with Mobile2go as the brand ambassador. Liu Ying will get a six-figure income thanks to the sponsorship from the mobile gadget and service store.
“I’m so grateful to Mobile2go. They’ve appointed me as their brand ambassador even before I take part in my first competition in six months. That’s a big motivation for me to go all out,” said Liu Ying.
Mobile2go director Chan Chee Fai said: “We’ve tied up with Liu Ying because of her personality. She is a fighter. She keeps coming back after injuries and it’s great for us to be associated with her.”
She decided to go for surgery on her shoulder in May and that saw her go through a temporary separation with Peng Soon.
Prior to the injury, the duo won a silver medal at the Rio Olympic Games in August 2016 and finished second at the All-England in March in 2017.
In her absence, Peng Soon has been playing with junior Cheah Yee See.
Liu Ying returned to training last month and she has been partnered with 2016 World junior bronze medallist Chen Tang Jie.
Liu Ying-Tang Jie have been entered for the fifth-tier India International Series from Nov 23-26 in Hyderabad and the fourth-tier India International Challenge from Nov 29-Dec 3 in Mumbai.
“I can’t wait to play again. It has been a long wait and I’m excited,” said Liu Ying.
She said she was looking forward to playing with 19-year-old Tang Jie, describing the experience of playing with a junior a humbling process.
“I’ve played with Peng Soon for nine years. Peng Soon knows exactly what to do. I’m starting all over again with Tang Jie,” said Liu Ying.
“Tang Jie and I have been training together for almost a month. He is a very hard working player and eager to learn. I’m also learning along the way.
“It takes time and some adjustments but I’m enjoying it. Tang Jie’s good attitude on the court makes it easy for me.”
Liu Ying added: “It’ll be great to win a title with my junior partner but I do not want to rush into things. I’m a fighter and I believe that I’ll get back to the top again - slow and steady.”
Liu Ying has not ruled out the possibility of reuniting with Peng Soon for two major tournaments next year - the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia in April and the Asian Games in Jakarta in August.
“It all depends on the coaches. For now, I’m focused on making it work with Tang Jie.”
