Brothers on family picnic swept away by wave, one drowns

GEORGE TOWN: A family outing for a family of six turned tragic when two sons were swept away by strong waves, drowning one of them.
Muhamad Naim Abdul Gani, 15, and Muhamad Firdaus, 18, were swimming when a violent wave hit them at Miami Beach in Batu Ferringhi.
Muhamad Naim was rescued by a beach-goer while Muhamad Firdaus’s body was found at low tide in the vicinity at 7.50pm yesterday.
Their father Abdul Gani Saad, 51, said the wave struck at noon.
“My boys can’t swim and were dipping in the water when the wave took them.
“I panicked when I saw only their hands above the water. I called out for help and a kind-hearted beach-goer quickly jumped into the water and grabbed my second son.
“But my eldest didn’t come back up. We called the police at 12.30pm,” he said, adding that they were from Bukit Mertajam and went there for a picnic.
He said his second son was hospitalised.
The search and rescue party comprised the police, marine police, firemen, the Civil Defence Force and other departments.
