Remand extended for drug suspect who escaped the cops

GEORGE TOWN: The remand of a drug accused who escaped from police custody using a “self-made” key has been extended.
Deputy registrar Ahmad Tajudin Zain granted a further three-day remand for Khairul Nizam Abdullah Sani, 33, to help investigations into the incident almost three weeks ago.
Khairul Nizam and another drug accused, G. Anned Babu, 37, managed to flee from the George Town Courts complex in Lebuh Light on Sept 6.
They were among 29 detainees who were being escorted by four policemen to a vehicle from the court lockup that day.
All the accused were bound in three sets of chained handcuffs, but the two managed to free themselves.
Khairul Nizam went missing while Anned Babu was nabbed shortly after the incident.
Policemen found a self-made key in a drain near the court.
Police rearrested Khairul Nizam at an undisclosed spot in Sungai Nibong at 6pm on Sept 23.
George Town OCPD Asst Comm Anuar Omar said the case had been classified as negligence by a public servant in allowing the escape of a person under custody under Section 223 of the Penal Code.
The case is also classified as escape from custody under the same code.
