PM’s White House visit for national interest, says Wee

KAJANG: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s US visit is for national interest, said MCA deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.
“The announcement on investments in the United States is to address the Trump administration’s decision to put Malaysia on a trade deficit watchlist,” he said.
He said Malaysia ranked ninth among 16 countries on the list.
It was reported in March that US President Donald Trump ordered staff to pinpoint countries and goods responsible for the United States’ nearly US$50bil (RM209.47bil) trade deficit.
Dr Wee also defended Malaysia Airlines Bhd’s purchase of Boeing planes and increased Employees Provident Fund (EPF) investments in the United States.
“There are only two major aircraft manufacturers in the world. It is either US-based Boeing or its European rival Airbus. The decision was made based on the needs of MAS,” he told reporters after launching a book authored by MCA vice-president Datuk Dr Hou Kok Chung at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman.
Wee, who is Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, said the decision to buy from Boeing was also because the European Union was looking to boycott palm oil products.
He pointed out that EPF has a proven track record of being professional in its investment decisions.
“The board will conduct due diligence before any investment. It previously invested in the United Kingdom and other countries which provided good returns,” he said.
Dr Wee said the Opposition was using Najib’s visit to the United States to stir up people’s emotions.
“The Opposition is opposing for the sake of opposing. No matter what the Government does, they will oppose,” he said.
The Opposition had previously claimed that the Government was “selling the country” when Malaysian and Chinese companies signed 14 agreements worth RM144bil, he said.
