Penampang cops adopt 'green' disposal methods for seized items

PENAMPANG: The Penampang police contingent has become the first district police station to implement environmentally friendly methods to dispose of confiscated items.
The police contingent on Wednesday got rid of about 700 seized items including computers and gambling machines in compliance with the Environmental Quality (scheduled waste) Regulations 2005 under the Environmental Quality Act 1974.
Sabah Deputy Crime Investigation Department (investigation and legislation) Asst Comm Jauteh Dikun said they would be disposing of their electronic waste, or simply e-waste, confiscated between 2000 and 2014, in a green manner.
He said the Sabah Environmental Protection Department would take charge of the disposal process by appointing licensed contractors.
He urged other district police stations in Sabah to follow suit and adopt the standard operating procedure for such waste outlined by the Environment Department.
Beside the seized computers and gambling machines, the Penampang CID division also handed over RM23,926.90 of seized cash to the Treasury Department.
Earlier, the Sabah Department of Environment director Tunku Khalkausar Tunku Fathahi @ Fatahi said they welcome any authorities or companies that wish to dispose of their electronic items.
"This method has long been implemented in the peninsula and I hope it will be received and implemented in Sabah," she said, adding that all e-waste would be disposed of in the peninsula.
