Opposition reminded that Azmin, Anwar, Guan Eng, Wanita PKR chief barred from 2004 poll

PETALING JAYA: A political commentator has reminded Opposition leaders of the "dictatorial and oppressive government" led by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad (pic) when he was prime minister.
Lim Sian See said as such, for DAP leaders Lim Kit Siang and Lim Guan Eng, and PKR leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to forget the way Dr Mahathir ruled "show what lying unprincipled lalang (tall grass) they are."
In a statement, he explained that during the period Dr Mahathir was prime minister between 1999 and 2004, he had used the Internal Security Act (ISA), other coercive laws and the courts to curb the Opposition.
"Ezam Mohamed Nor, Tian Chua, Saari Sungib, Lokman Noor Adam, Dr Badrulamin Bahron, Hishamuddin Rais (and for a while Raja Petra and Gobalakrishnan too) were detained under the ISA on trumped-up charges of threatening national security," he said.
He also noted that former Wanita PKR deputy chief Irene Fernandez was sentenced to a year's jail for publishing allegedly false news while Mohd Ezam was taken to court on charges under the Official Secrets Act (OSA).
"(Penang chief minister) Guan Eng was already in jail as at Aug 25, 1998 – three months before GE12. So is (PKR de facto leader) Anwar," he said.
Sian See said that this inadvertently saw Azmin, Fernandez, Guan Eng and Anwar being ineligible to contest in the 2004 election on the grounds of their conviction.
"Looks like Mahathir (and now Kit Siang) tak tahu (don't know) or already mudah lupa (forgotten).
"Forget about Mahathir, who has no sense of shame or hypocrisy, but for Kit Siang, Azmin, Guan Eng, Anwar and the rest to forget all these shows what lying unprincipled lalangs they are," he said.
