Mukhriz wants Navy deployed to send message to Myanmar

PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir has called for the Royal Malaysian Navy to be deployed in response to the continuing violence against the ethnic Rohingya in Myanmar.
In a series of tweets on Wednesday, the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia deputy president said that the oppression of the Rohingya under Myanmar's government could not be ignored.
"The Malaysian people love peace. But the unrestricted tyranny taking place under Aung San Suu Kyi's regime towards the Rohingya cannot be allowed.
"Our humanity cannot be upheld if mass murder takes place without any response. Save the Rohingya.
"I urge the Malaysian Government to deploy the Royal Malaysian Navy to the Bay of Bengal. That is only language that Myanmar would understand. Allah save the Rohingya," he said.
There has been growing local and international concern over the violence occurring in Myanmar's Rakhine state.
On Tuesday, the Foreign Ministry summoned the Myanmar Ambassador to Malaysia over the crisis, while Indonesia saw thousands rallying in Jakarta on Wednesday.
The most recent round of violence in Myanmar erupted after an attack by militants on police posts and an army base on Aug 25.
This prompted a massive counter-offensive that is reported to have killed 400 with a reported 146,000 Rohingya Muslims fleeing violence to Bangladesh.
