Man escapes unhurt after car swept away in river

KOTA KINABALU: A swift-flowing river almost cost a man his life when strong currents swept away the car he was driving.
Pairo @ Gandili Salagan, 50, had attempted to drive across the river at Kg. Poturidong in Tamparuli near here on Monday evening, but a sudden rush of water swept away his four-wheel drive vehicle.
The vehicle's tyres, however, got stuck on large rocks, allowing for the driver to be rescued.
Villagers drove into the river in four-wheel drive vehicles and attached ropes onto the affected car, before pulling it to safety.
Sabah Fire and Rescue Department Operations chief Khatizah Rahaban said firemen were also at the scene to assist in the 5.40pm incident.
"The man was unhurt in the incident," she said.
She also advised the public against driving across rivers during the rainy season.
