Malaysia to work with US to combat sexual crimes against children

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia is seeking to a form a strategic cooperation with the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) in the United States to help combat sexual crimes against children, said Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.
The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, who is leading the Government’s task force to tackle child sexual crimes, said measures and efforts taken by NCMEC will be studied to be implemented in Malaysia.
“The meeting with NCMEC in Washington will give the opportunity for our country to learn and get feedback on the issue championed by the body especially in its efforts to rescue missing children and gather report involving sexual exploitation of children,” she said in a statement Saturday.
Azalina was on a working visit to New York and Washington between Sept 11 and 14 to gather the best international practices in fighting cyber crimes, including child pornography and sexual exploitation of minors.
Among them was a dark family secret which came to light after a father noticed his 13-year-old daughter’s swollen belly.
Tests revealed that the student from Kajang was seven months pregnant after she was raped by her 16-year-old brother.
An 18-year-old claimed trial at the Sessions Court in Sungai Petani, Kedah, on Aug 9 to four charges of committing incest and inserting his finger into the genitals of three of his sisters, aged eight, 10 and 14.
On Aug 10, a "monster dad" was charged with over 600 counts of sodomising and sexually abusing his 15-year-old daughter in Petaling Jaya.
The divorced unit trust agent, 36, was sentenced to 48 years in jail after he pleaded guilty on Sept 8.
On her working visit, Azalina said it was also aimed at identifying challenges on new threats of cyber crimes against children.
“This is part of a follow up initiative on the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 and the set up of a special criminal court for children.
"The visit has promoted international cooperation between the two countries in terms of exchanging information and technical expertise in various aspects as well as strengthening diplomatic relations," she said.
