Getaway car found, but gold robbers still on the loose

BUTTERWORTH: The getaway car used by four men following a RM1.8mil gold robbery was found in Ampang Jajar, about 4km from the scene of the crime.

The red car was found at the People’s Housing Project (PPR) at about 2pm yesterday. Some clothes were found in the car and police hope that these will help them identify the robbers.

The back of the car was badly damaged as the driver had reversed into another car while escaping the scene after the robbery.

Two men were leaving a goldsmith’s premises in Jalan Siram with 11kg of gold at 9.45am when they were confronted by the robbers armed with axes and a hammer shortly after they entered their truck.

“The robbers stopped next to the truck, and three of them got down from the car.

“They grabbed the bag of gold, which was to be transported to Kuala Lumpur, before fleeing.

“A security officer who witnessed the incident fired four shots at the suspects from the first floor but missed,” said acting state police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Roslee Chik.
