Exciting clash of the veterans ends in 2-2 draw

SOCCER great Datuk Soh Chin Aun was given the star treatment when he came to Penang for a friendly football match at the public field in Balik Pulau.
He was among seven former national players who played in the ‘National veterans versus Balik Pulau veterans’ match.
The other ex-national players included Datuk Shukor Salleh and Namat Abdullah.
Many youths could be seen taking wefies and photos with the former players.
Among them was Nor Azizan Kamaruddin, 15, who could not hide his joy when meeting Chin Aun.
“My father has spoken a lot about him and it’s really an honour to meet him,” said Nor Azizan after getting an autograph from Chin Aun during the event recently.
Chin Aun said: “I am glad to play in this friendly match and it’s heartening to see the interest in football among the young. This game is more of comradeship, as after all, we are friends who have played together.”
About 500 people turned up to watch the 45-minute match which ended in a 2-2 draw.
The national veterans proved their mettle when they scored the first goal in the 30th minute but the home team equalised shortly after.
Both sides were having such a great time on the field that adownpour failed to stop the match.
Teluk Bahang assemblyman Datuk Shah Headan Ayoob Hussain Shah said the game was to showcase the football greats in a friendly match and give children an opportunity to see them in action.
“The spirit of competition was there but above all, it was the friendship among the players which sent a message of unity to the younger generation,” said Shah Headan, who played for the Balik Pulau veterans.
