Esscom nabs 23 trying to enter Sabah illegally

KOTA KINABALU: Two groups of people comprising 23 foreign nationals tried to enter Sabah waters illegally, but their attempts proved futile as they were arrested by security forces.
Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) commander Datuk Hazani Ghazali said the two groups of illegals comprising 23 people were nabbed in separate raids in Lahad Datu and Semporna on Thursday and Friday.
"On Thursday night, we arrested 15 illegal immigrants, including an infant, in waters off Kampung Makuou, Lahad Datu at about 8pm Thursday," he said.
The immigrants, aged between one and 64, comprised 12 males and three females.
Hazani said they were intercepted by a team of patrol officers conducting an anti-human trafficking and migrant smuggling exercise in the area.
Meanwhile at 7.10am Friday, Semporna police also stopped eight sea gypsies near the Mataking area.
"They are believed to be from Philippine waters," he said.
The immigrants, aged between seven and 75, comprised seven men and a woman.
Hazani said both cases are being investigated under the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Migrant Smuggling Act 2007.
"We will conduct sea patrols and raids continuously to safeguard Sabah's waters," he said.
