Elusive 300kg crocodile finally caught in Sarawak

KUCHING: An early morning preparation for Hari Raya Haji turned into a chaotic affair for villagers of Kg Kaba, Saratok, when a 300kg crocodile lurking in the area since last year was finally caught.
Farizan Salleh, 39, said his 62-year-old mother Sakiah Jali realised that a crocodile was caught in a trap set by the villagers in a drainage near one of the houses.
Sakiah was preparing food for the Raya celebration at 5.30am when she heard the sound of rippling water near the trap.
She went to inspect the noise around 6am and quickly informed the villagers after finding out that a crocodile was caught.
Several villagers tied up the crocodile, estimated to weigh 300kg and 4.5m in length, and pulled it to the riverbank to be handed to the Sarawak Forestry Corporation.
“We believe this is the same crocodile that has been lurking in the waters near our village since last year. It must have been attracted to the rubbish disposed at the river,” Farizan said.
He said a crocodile was caught in a trap before but it managed to escape before they could do anything.
He believes the crocodile that was caught yesterday to be the same one that has been lurking in the river over the past year.
Since the sighting, villagers minimised their river activities but it will be better from now, he said.
