Zahid: Next IGP to be picked on Sept 4

KUALA NERUS: Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi will chair a police commission meeting on Sept 4 to decide on the next Inspector-General of Police.
The Deputy Prime Minister said the name of the successor would then be presented to Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V for His Majesty’s consent before the official appointment is announced.
The candidate will replace Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar, who retires next month.
“I hope there will be no speculation on the appointment of the successor and the deputy IGP. These appointments will be made after obtaining the consent of Tuanku,” said Dr Ahmad Zahid, who is the Home Minister.
He added that the meeting would also determine the directors of several police departments.
Dr Ahmad Zahid was speaking to reporters after opening the Kuala Nerus Umno division delegates meeting at the Gong Badak Indoor Stadium in Terengganu yesterday.
He expressed his appreciation to Khalid for his contributions in enhancing the force’s image through various transformation initiatives.
“He has undertaken much transformation in Bukit Aman and helped to translate the ministry’s vision to reduce crime index at the national level, bringing down the rate by 47%,” he said.
On another matter, Dr Ahmad Zahid, who is Umno vice-president discharging the duties of the deputy president, said all the state Umno committees had sent their list of candidates to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who is also Umno president.
“The list is not final because we will scrutinise the candidates on their potential to win at the state and parliamentary levels,” he said.
In his speech, Dr Ahmad Zahid advised Umno leaders to have the winning mentality in facing political adversaries attempting to topple Umno and the Barisan Nasional in the next general election.
“They must work hard continuously to achieve outstanding victory. We need to have the winning mentality in all of us at the divisional, branch and grassroots levels.
