Women's football: Malaysia stumbles, Philippines soar with 2-1 win

IT turned out to be an embarrassing day for Malaysia in women's football.
Many expected Malaysia to cruise past the Philippines but instead they suffered their first ever defeat in four Sea Games meetings to the World No. 75 team.
Asyraaf Abdullah's side showed dedication and commitment but were lacking in creativity as they lost 2-1 to the Filipinos in their opening match at UiTM Stadium in Shah Alam on Tuesday.
With the defeat, Malaysia will now find it very tough to finish on the podium in the round robin competition as Thailand, Vietnam and Myanmar are considered the best three teams in the region.
The Philippines were more settled and dominated play in the first half.
Captain Impelido Patrice had a free kick and a header blocked by Malaysia goalkeeper Nurul Azurin Mazlan in the 23rd and 26th minutes.
But the Filipinos were not to be denied when they took the lead two minutes into first half of stoppage time.
Impelido headed in a corner kick for the Philippines' opening goal.
Malaysia pressed hard in the opening minutes after the break and came close through captain Masturah Majid (49th) and Haindee Mosrah (50th).
Their persistence paid off when Dadree Rofinus collected a rebound and shot into an empty net for the equaliser in the 52nd minute.
However, the Filipinos continued to play systematically to trouble Malaysia.
Rodriguez Kathleen's looping shot from 35 metres out earned the Filipinos three points in the 73rd minute.
Malaysia will continue their campaign against Myanmar, who lost 3-2 to Thailand, on Thursday.
