Umno leader calls for top two party positions to go uncontested

ALOR STAR: Kedah Umno Liaison Committee chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah today called for the top two party posts not to be contested in the next party election.
Bashah, who is also Kedah Menteri Besar, proposed that vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is executing the duties of Umno deputy president, be nominated and unanimously appointed to the deputy post without contest in the next party polls.
"In Umno, we cannot afford to have the number one and two posts be contested. If we allow it to happen, it might cause a split in the party.
"If the number two man is someone chosen by the number one himself, then we should maintain it," he said in his welcome speech at the Alor Star Umno division delegates meeting, which was opened by Zahid today.
Also present were Kedah Umno secretary Datuk Md Rozai Shafian and Barisan Nasional (BN) components leaders.
Bashah said Umno Kedah will stand firmly behind party president Datuk Seri Najib Razak and Zahid to fend off attacks from opposition parties.
Earlier in his speech, Bashah urged all Umno divisions to mobilise their respective machinery to face the 14th general election (GE14).
Describing the GE14 as the most challenging battle for Umno and BN, Bashah said they must ensure that the party retains the mandate given to it by voters in the previous general polls, after losing the state to the opposition in the GE12.
"Our machinery must go down to the ground and meet the voters to make sure that they do not make the wrong choice in the upcoming general election," he added.
