Typhoon Hato disrupts AirAsia, MAS flights to Hong Kong, Macao and China

PETALING JAYA: A total of 14 AirAsia flights to Hong Kong, Macao and China from Malaysia have been cancelled or rescheduled as Typhoon Hato makes landfall in Hong Kong.
"All affected guests for the flights today (Wednesday) have been notified by AirAsia. "The airline strongly encourages all guests to update their contact details at airasia.com to ensure that they are notified of any updates to their flights," the airline said in a statement.
Malaysia Airlines said it cancelled two Hong Kong flights and retimed a flight to Guangzhou.
In a statement, MAS said that MH72 and MH73 Kuala Lumpur-Hong Kong-Kuala Lumpur has been cancelled.
"Passengers are transferred onto MH432 and MH433 of the same day, which will be operated by the A380-800 instead of the B737-800 aircraft," said MAS.
MH376 from Kuala Lumpur to Guangzhou has been retimed to depart Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) at 5pm on Wednesday and will arrive in Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport at 9.10pm the same day.
The return flight, MH377 from Guangzhou to Kuala Lumpur is also retimed to depart at 10pm and arrive 2.05am the next day.
"Malaysia Airlines is closely monitoring the situation and will adjust flight operations if necessary," said MAS.
Hong Kong's Observatory issued a No. 10 typhoon signal at 9.10am on Wednesday, the highest in Hong Kong's storm warning system.
The No. 10 warning means "hurricane force winds" are expected with speeds of 118km an hour and gusts that may exceed 220km an hour.
According to the Observatory, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Ngong Ping, Cheung Chau and Waglan Island as of 11.45am were 172, 132 and 128km per hour with maximum gusts of 223, 171 and 137km per hour respectively.
An amber rainstorm warning was also issued at 8am, which means that more than 30mm of rain is expected to fall within an hour.
In response to Typhoon Hato, Hong Kong has cancelled flights, ferry and bus services.
Schools and many businesses have closed, and Hong Kong's stock exchange has cancelled the morning trading session.
