Tennis joy as Jawairiah and Theiviya are assured of medal in doubles

JAWAIRIAH Noordin (right) and S. Theiviya (left) have achieved something Malaysian tennis hasn’t been able to do since the 2003 Hanoi SEA Games.
The duo are assured of a medal after reaching the women’s doubles semi-finals at the National Tennis Complex in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
Fourth seeds Jawairiah-Theiviya were given a run for their money by Nguyen Tu Kim Ngan-Ngoc Si Boi of Vietnam before prevailing 6-4, 6-7, (10-7) and they will aim to make the final when they face top seeds Nicha Lertpitaksinchai-Peangtarn Plipuech of Thailand.
Malaysia have been able to make the podium of the team events, but found the individual medals harder to come by.
The last medallists were Si Yew Ming and Khoo Chin Bee when they picked up a mixed doubles bronze in Hanoi.
“We’re happy to have won Malaysia’s first individual medal in many years,” said Theiviya.
“But our mission is not over yet.
“We are going to give it a shot at turning the bronze to a brighter colour.
“We’ve nothing to lose against the Thais.”
Jawairiah-Theiviya are Malaysia’s sole survivors after the men’s doubles pairs of Assri Merzuki-Syed Agil Syed Naguib and Koay Hao Shen-Ahmed Deedat Abdul Razak and women’s singles player Aslina Chua crashed out in the other last eight matches yesterday.
