Search for four missing fishermen in Dungun continues

DUNGUN: The search and rescue (SAR) operation to locate four fishermen who disappeared after their boat capsized off Kuala Dungun last night is still on-going.
State Traffic Enforcement Investigation Department chief Superintendent Abd Razak Hasan said as of 5pm today, Nazri Yacob, 37, from Pasir Putih; Che Mohd Affendi Ismail, 34, from Pasir Putih; Mohd Zawawi Mohamed, 24, from Kampung Pacakan, Semerak; all in Kelantan; and Abd Wahab Zakaria, 44, from Kampung Hutan Nangka, Jertih,Terengganu, were yet to be found.
Razak said the fifth fisherman in the boat, Mohd Shahrin Yacob, 33, managed to swim to safety to the beach.
"He (Shahrin) said the boat was hit by strong waves as they were entering the estuary on the way to the Kuala Dungun jetty," he said.
The capsize reportedly occured at about 10pm.
Meanwhile, SAR operation today focused along the Kuala Dungun estuary and nearby beach.
Razak said 70 people including 11 policemen from the district police station were involved in the SAR.
"Also joining the SAR starting 8am included 11 Civil Defence Department officers, 10 villagers and 11 officers from the Maritime Department," he said.
The five fishermen were crew members of a Marang-based fishing vessel that was anchored 400m from the jetty at the time of the incident.
The boat capsized about 100m from where the the fishing vessel was anchored.
Meanwhile, Shahrin said while he was swimming towards the shore, he could see his friends clinging on to the boat.
However, he said the four disappeared from his view by the time he reached the jetty.
