School administrators reminded to avoid touching on multiracial sensitivity

PADANG TERAP: School administrators were reminded that any decisions made at school level should not contradict existing regulations and circular issued by the Education Ministry.
Its minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said while school administrators are given the freedom to make administrative decisions, they should not touch the sensitivity of Malaysia’s multiracial society.
He said school administrators should play the role in uniting students from various ethnic and religious instead of making any decision that incite racial sentiment.
"Schools administrators may think out of the box in making decisions that suit their respective school, but it has to be in line with the regulations and circulars from the ministry.
"Decisions also must be made in the spirit of uniting our multiracial ethnic, instead of touching on religious and ethnic sensitivity," he told reporters after opening the Padang Terap Umno wings' delegates meeting in Kuala Nerang here.
Mahdzir, who is also Padang Terap member of Parliament was responding to news reports that a primary school in Hulu Langat, Selangor separated drinking cups used by its religiously-mixed pupils.
He stressed that all decisions should also always uphold their role as agents of unity and instilling good values among the students.
Mahdzir said this in line with the government policy to nurture unity among students from multiracial and multiethnic society.
He assured that the Selangor Education Department would be investigating the matter.
It was reported that the school had practiced segregation of drinking cups used by Muslim and non-Muslim school students.
The Hulu Langat school’s policy made its rounds on social media yesterday, sparking debate among netizens on the treatment of non-Muslim students in schools.
The school’s authorities declined to comment on the matter, but Deputy Education Minister Datuk Chong Sin Woon has urged the Selangor Education Department to launch an investigation soon.
