Robbery suspects flee bank empty-handed

GEORGE TOWN: The casual manners of two men who attempted to break an automated teller machine (ATM) in front of other bank customers in Jelutong here this morning, has raised eyebrows.
The duo were seen prising open the ATM door although there were other customers using other ATMs during the 7.15am incident.
In the 54-second closed circuit television (CCTV) camera recording, which has since gone viral, one of the men was clad in a yellow shirt, and his accomplice was wearing a black shirt.
The recording also showed the robbers, on the pretext of wathdrawing money, were repeatedly sitting down and standing up when customers walked into the bank.
One of the robbers kicked the ATM door until it opened but they fled empty-handed.
Sources said the incident was only detected after a maintenance worker came to check on the ATM at about 8.30am. The worker then called the police.
"Checks showed that the two men did not take any cash from the ATM but the door was damaged," the source said.
Meanwhile, state criminal investigation department deputy chief ()intelligence/operations) Assistant Commissioner Rahimi Ra'ais confirmed receiving a report on the case.
"Police are tracking down the two men to assist in investigations under Section 379/511 of the Penal Code for attempted robbery,” he said.
Those with information can contact the nearest police station.
