Nationwide hunt for two in shooting of sub-inspector

The two men wanted by police in connection with the shooting of a sub-inspector in Kedah
PETALING JAYA: Police have began a nationwide hunt for two men following the fatal shooting of a sub-inspector at a house in Changloon, Kedah.
The two men are believed to be on the run after Insp Abu Hashim Ismail, 54, was shot dead in Taman Sri Hosba at around 10.25pm on Friday.
Kedah police chief Comm Datuk Asri Yusoff said the two men have been identified as Mohd Hatta Johari, 30, and Mohd Najib Budin, 36.
"We believe the victim, who was a detective at Bukit Aman's CID, had gone to the house of an acquaintance to get information about smuggling and underworld activities in the Bukit Kayu Hitam area.
"We raided the two men's houses but they have fled," he told a press conference here on Saturday.
He said police have also launched Op Tutup to stop the two from leaving the country.Abu Hashim, who had four bullet wounds on his back, died at the scene.
The acquaintance managed to escape by ducking under a table. He has been remanded for a week to assist in the investigations.
Abu Hashim's body was sent to Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah in Alor Setar for a post-mortem. He was believed to be on leave and close to retiring from the force.
It was reported that a special team from Bukit Aman, including the Special Taskforce on Organised Crime (Staffoc), has been sent to Kedah to aid in the investigation.
In a separate case, Comm Asri said police shot dead a leader of "Gang 36" in a house at Lagenda Heights, Sungai Petani in a 7.30am raid.
"When my men went to the house and introduced themselves, the suspect, in his 30s, ran upstairs and hid in a toilet.
"He then fired at the policemen who returned fire," he said.
Police also found marijuana, heroin and a pistol in the house.
