KOTA KINABALU: A group of Indonesians who tried sneaking out of the country via illegal sea routes off Tawau has been arrested.
The 24 Indonesians - eight men, five women,10 children and the boat's skipper - were arrested at about 2.15pm on Saturday.
Tawau Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) district director Captain Romli Mustafa said the Indonesians were on a speedboat and believed to have been heading towards Sungai Hj Kuning when enforcement officers spotted them.
"Upon inspection, we found that only the skipper and two passengers had identification documents but did no posses travel documents," he said.
He added that the others had failed to produce any documents when asked.
All the passengers will be referred to the Immigration Department for further action.
Captain Romli said the boat's skipper would be investigated for sailing an overloaded boat, not adhering to safety regulations and for travelling on illegal routes.
