Man hears about accident, finds out later fatal crash involved nephew

TANAH MERAH: Unknown to a pharmacy assistant, when he engaged in a discussion with villagers at a mosque after Isyak prayers on Thursday night about an accident that had taken place, he was talking about his nephew.
Mohd Nuzi Jusoh only realised the fatal crash in Kampung Paloh here involved his nephew Shafiq Safwan Mohd Fozan when he arrived home.
The 36-year-old said he was informed by his family members when he reached home at 9pm.
“It is really shocked me. The other villagers and I were earlier discussing the accident after we performed the Isyak prayers.
“Many were in the dark on the identities of the victims but some suspected they are from our village. I only knew about the death of my nephew (in the accident) after reaching home later,” said Nuzi when met at the Tanah Merah Hospital.
He said he last met Shafiq, 26, a Tenaga Nasional Berhad staff, when he met Shafiq’s parents before they left to perform the Haj two weeks ago.
Shafiq was killed when the car he was travelling with a friend collided with two vehicles at Km9.7 Jalan Tanah Merah-Pasir Mas near here on Thursday night.
Tanah Merah police chief Deputy Superintendent Suzaimi Mohamad said Shafiq’s friend and driver, identified as Mohamad Fikri Firdaus Mat Deris, 25, was also killed in the 8.15pm incident.
“The incident also caused two others including a woman to suffer serious injuries. Initial investigation showed that Fikri and Shafiq in the Toyota Corona were on their way to Tanah Merah from Pasir Mas. Fikri is believed to have lost control of his car after overtaking a vehicle, and collided with another two cars from the opposite direction,” he said.
Suzaimi said both Fikri and Shafiq died at the scene of the accident.
