Man charged with offering RM2k bribe to Forestry Dept officer

KUALA TERENGGANU: A man accused of offering a RM2,000 bribe to a Forestry Department officer for the release of a lorry laden with logs with unpaid tax, today claimed trial to two charges at the High Court here today.
Chow Kwee Chai, 47, was charged under Section 68 of the National Forestry Act 1984 for illegal possession of logs and Section 17 (b) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 (Act 694).
In the 5am incident on June 9, Chow Kwee Chai, 47, had approached district assistant forestry officer Illias Awang, who had stopped a lorry in Binjai, Kemaman, to conduct checks on the logs. Chow was accused of offering a bribe to the officer for the release of the lorry.
Chow was arrested by agents from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) who was involved in the integrated operation with the Forestry Department.
Kuala Terengganu High Court judge Azman bin Mustapha has fixed Sept 14 for the case to be re-mentioned.
Chow who was not represented in court paid his bail of RM7,000.
