Five arrested following accident at sea

KUCHING: Five men, three of whom were Indian nationals, were arrested to facilitate investigations by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) into a minor accident involving a cargo ship and a fishing boat last night (Tuesday).
The suspects, aged between 19 and 51, are crew members of the cargo ship, which grazed the right side of the fishing boat at about five nautical miles from Muara Tebas near here.
All suspects and 16 crew on board the fishing boat were unhurt during the 7.50pm mishap.
The fishing boat, however, was left with technical problems prompting the fishermen to seek assistance from the MMEA. The cargo ship was not damaged.
Kuching Maritime District Director Captain (M) Shahref Steve Mac Queen Abdullah said checks showed the cargo ship had sailed without a qualified skipper and technician as required by the Marine Department.
“Investigation is being conducted under the Marine Shipping Ordinance 1952,” Shahref said in a statement today.
According to Section 71 of the Ordinance, the suspects face a maximum RM10,000 fine or two years’ jail or both if found guilty.
