Firemen find mum and child’s remains in an embrace

IPOH: A morning fire that broke out on the second floor of a double-storey wooden house in Teluk Intan killed a mother and her 12-year-old daughter.
Factory operator S. Kalivanni, 47, and pupil G. Vikhineshwary perished in the 3.30am incident yesterday in Kampung Srijaya.
Lorry driver R. Ghanasekharan made it out of the burning building, escaping with four family members, including a toddler and a senior citizen. However, he could not save his wife and daughter.
According to Hilir Perak OCPD Asst Comm Wan Hassan Wan Ahmad, Ghanasekharan’s nephew, a 32-year-old who is also a lorry driver, said he had just switched off the television at the house downstairs at around 3am and was getting ready to go to bed.
“Half an hour later, he heard a small explosion and saw that the floor above was on fire.
“Together with the rest of the family, who were sleeping downstairs, they ran out of the house,” he said.
ACP Wan Hassan said Ghanasekharan and his nephew tried to save the mother and daughter who were sleeping upstairs.
“They could not do so as the fire was spreading fast,” he said.
“Firemen found Kalivanni and Vikhineshwary’s charred remains locked in an embrace after putting out the fire.
“Ghanasekharan is being treated at the ICU of the Teluk Intan Hospital,” ACP Wan Hassan said. “He is in stable condition.”
The victims were sent to the same hospital for a post-mortem.
