Police nab labourer for allege rape of grandniece, now 6 months pregnant

SUNGAI PETANI: Police have detained a labourer to assist with investigations into a rape case involving his 14-year-old grandniece, who is now six months pregnant.
Kuala Muda deputy police chief Superintendent Saifi Abd Hamid said the 54-year-old man was picked up on Tuesday after the victim’s mother lodged a police report.
Saifi said the 35-year-old woman, who lives in Sitiawan, Perak, said she received a call from her cousin on July 15 to inform her that her daughter is pregnant.
“Her cousin had suspected that the girl was raped by the granduncle who had adopted the victim since she was 9.
“The complainant tried to contact her uncle to verify the allegation and wished to take her daughter back, but to no avail,” he said in a statement.
Saifi added that the girl claimed that the suspect had raped her when they were alone at home sometime in December.
“The victim claimed that there was a power outage during the incident and the suspect had barged into her room and hit her on the head before raping her,” he said.
Saifi said the victim claimed that she was too afraid to share her ordeal with anyone, for fearing that it would bring shame to the family.
Police have obtained a week-long remand order against the suspect for further investigation.
