Hisham dares Dr M to contest against Najib

KUANTAN: The aspiration of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Pribumi) president Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to contest in the Pekan parliamentary constituency is a populist statement, said Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein.
Hishammuddin said that Dr Mahathir's statement was deliberately issued when the meetings of Umno divisional delegates were being held and meant to distract members from the meeting.
He added that the entire Barisan leadership will defend the seat of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak if Dr Mahathir contests in Pekan as Najib is the party president.
"Go ahead if you dare," Hishammuddin told reporters after opening the Cameron Highlands Umno delegates meeting at Sungai Koyan in Lipis near here.
Dr Mahathir had said he wanted to contest in Pekan against Najib if there were no other suitable candidates.
On PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli's statement that more Malays were found supporting Pakatan Harapan than Barisan ahead of GE14, Hishammuddin said the issue was not new.
"Rafizi always makes statements, but when his statement is answered he would move the goal posts. He deliberately throws out issues to see our reaction," said Hishammuddin.
On the wishes of the division's delegates for an Umno representative to replace MIC in the Cameron Highlands parliament constituency, Hishammuddin said the proposal would be taken to the top leadership.
"We have to look for candidates who are acceptable to the people, and what is important in the present situation, members in this hall alone are not enough to make our candidates win," said Hishammuddin.
He added that Barisan would be unable to win without the support of all the people in multi-racial areas.
"I, however, assured them that the decision made by the leadership will be for the sake of the party," said Hishammuddin.
