Four fishermen rescued after boat explodes off Kuala Chendering

KUALA TERENGGANU: Four fishermen from Marang, cheated death when their fishing boat caught fire near Kuala Chendering last night.
The incident occured about the five nautical miles off Chendering at 8pm on Saturday.
State Fisheries Department director Zawawi Ali said the victims were identified as Awang Hamzah, 51, who was also the tekong (skipper), Mohd Aznan Ariffin, 50 Mohd Zaid Salleh, 52 .
"The fourth victim, Mohd Saludin Mustafa, 55, was scalded and sufferred burnt on both hands and legs as he was cooking during the incident," he added.
Zawawi said the engine of the boat exploded following a short circuit before it caught fire.
"Losses were estimated at RM60,000," he said today.
Zawawi said fishermen who were nearby rushed to help the victims and doused the fire.
"All of them jumped into the sea soon after the boat caught fire," he said, adding the fishermen were on their way to jig for squids.
He said Saludin was sent to the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital for treatment.
