Form Five student drowns in waterfall during outing

KEMAMAN: A picnic trip for a group of 11 students ended in tragedy when one of them drowned while bathing at the Jeram Penitih waterfalls in Seri Bandi here last Saturday.
District deputy police chief Deputy Superintendent Baharudin Abdullah said the victim, Ahmad Amirul Ahmad Rahimi, 17, a Form Five student of SMK Seri Bandi in Kemaman, and his friends arrived at the waterfall around 3.30pm.
Amirul, the eldest of four siblings and another ten schoolmates went to the waterfalls for a picnic after their trial Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examination in school.
It was learnt that all the boys rode motorcycles to the waterfalls which was situated about 15 kilometres away from the main road.
His friend, Muhammad Khairul Nizam Idayanto, 17, said they went to bath together before Amirul climbed up the cliff alone and jumped into the water.
"However, after he failed to surface, some of his friends jumped into the water to look for him and managed to find Amirul at the base of the water," he said.
He said Amirul was unconscious at the time and several of his friends went to alert the nearby villagers.
"The victim's body was sent to the Seri Bandi Health Clinic by his friends but he was pronounced dead.
“The body was transferred to the Kemaman Hospital forensic unit for post-mortem. The case was classified as sudden death, " said Baharudin today.
