Diving champ Jun Hoong arrives home to a rousing welcome

SEPANG: Newly-crowned diving champion Cheong Jun Hoong returned home to a rousing welcome from sports fans and top officials including Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) here.
Also present were the 27-year-old's family members - father Cheong Sun Meng, mother Leow Lai Kun and her sisters.
Last Wednesday, Jun Hoong made history when she upset Rio Olympics gold and silver medallists Si Yajie and Ren Qian of China to become Malaysia's first diving winner at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
A grand stage has been  set up for the event at the KLIA arrival hall to also welcome para-athletics world champions shot putter Ziyad Zolkepli and long-jumper Latif Romly as well as the national U-23 football team who had qualified for the AFC U-23 championship.
Ziyad, Latif and the U-23 team are expected to arrive at 6pm.
Jun Hoong, who was escorted to the stage by head coach Yang Zhuliang and the entire diving team, was touched by the reception.
"I want to thank everyone for coming today.  Your presence really means so much to me," said Jun Hoong who was close to tears.
Jun Hoong was also inducted into the Malaysian Book of Records during the function.
